Poseidon & Athena

Tuesday, August 10th 2010 by Pat

Here it is, part one in the story of Poseidon. A nine part tale of tridents, owls, love and the sea.

This has been a fun story to write, Gods make a particularly good starting point for characters, they’re flexible templates who can be cherry picked for background material. Poseidon here is a gentle curmudgeon, a rusty romantic, and a bit depressed by his recent breakup. I had a good time getting to know him.

Maybe I was a little off base but I thought this was like a Calvin and Hobbs cartoon where the characters are speaking in their regular voices but they inhabit different bodies. In the Calvin and Hobbs series there are times when Calvin is playing with Susie but they are depicted as realistic adults and their childish language creates an odd contrast with the adult characters. So in this comic when Athena said she was going to Portland, I immediately thought that the last frame was going to reveal who the actual characters were. Even though it didn’t, I still liked the concept that some issues are universal no matter who you are.

I’ve been anticipating something of this nature. Marvelous.

I would say sad as well, because I can’t spell poignant.
